The San Antonio City Council voted 6-4 Thursday night to approve the rezoning of Mission Trails Mobile Home Park.
Council approval paves the way for a $75 million retail and residential development to be constructed in the 1500 block of Mission Road, forcing residents who live in the mobile home park to vacate the property. Residents rent and own mobile homes at Mission Trails.
Several speakers were overcome with emotion while they addressed the council, asking members to vote no.
Thursday evening, the city and developers negotiated an increase in the amount of money paid to residents to get them to move.
The Developer, White Conlee Builders, is offering up to $5,000 in incentives for residents to be out by Aug. 15.
Residents who leave between Aug. 16 and Sep. 15 are eligible for up to $3,500 in moving assistance. Residents who can’t move their homes will have them purchased by the developer.
For some residents it is not about the money, it’s about leaving a place they have called home for many years.
Residents like Steve Perez believe they are being unfairly forced out.
“It makes me very upset. I worry about my kids because the school is just right here, I don’t know where to put my kids. Where (are) they going to go?” said Perez.
